Proofreading/copy-editing
Proofreading involves checking texts to ensure that they do not contain any spelling, grammar or punctuation errors and that they are correct in terms of form and content. Reviewing additionally involves checking the style and linguistic accuracy of a text.
I review and proofread texts that have been translated into German or are original German copy and proofread English texts, again whether translated into English or original English copy. Thanks to my network of native speakers from different English-speaking countries, I can also provide reviewing services for English texts.
“Native language principle” and having texts reviewed by colleagues
I always ensure that texts that are destined for publication are checked by someone else – that is, I translate the text myself and then have it reviewed by a colleague who is a native speaker of the target language. For all other texts, reviewing and proofreading services can be specially requested.
For texts requiring an exceptionally high level of linguistic expression and where style is critical (e.g. literary texts), I always work according to the “native language principle” and ensure that my translations are reviewed by a colleague. This means that I translate such texts exclusively from English into my native language, German, and then have them reviewed by a colleague whose native language is also German. For English texts of this kind, I either assign them within my own network or, if requested, I will be happy to put you in touch directly with skilled native English-speaking colleagues.
